Danielle Levitt.
The work of Danielle Levitt focuses on not only youth culture, but the “outcasts” in that culture. She is known for her raw and intimate portraits of usually contrasting bodies, or those that wouldn’t normally be shot together. To do this, she needs to immerse herself in these communities of non-conformist groups to gain trust. The photos are so raw, like the work of Lauren Greenfield. The difference, however, is Greenfield focuses on what is considered “normal” like her shots in Los Angeles. The contrast between the two is interesting to note, as they both emphasize not only the environment but the facial expressions and meaning of each image. Greenfield’s images tend to look at the broader societal meaning around each image, whereas Levitt focuses on the authenticity and diversity of youth culture through her projects such as “Heroin” or “Goth”, both of which contain more graphic images than Greenfield tends to shoot.
