Found Footage & Metaphor of Self
Found Footage.
The found footage project relied on the juxtaposition of tone and mood to directly change the intended feel of the video and audio used. I decided to keep it simple and play with happy and sad emotions. The first thing that came to mind was angry prank calls, so I found audio that matched that category. Next, I found happy stock footage that could juxtapose the audio. After playing around with them in an editor for a while, I found a result that successfully alters the feel of the video. The project was otherwise straightforward.
Metaphor of Self.
The metaphor of self project was a fun one to create. The whole thing was shot on and off The Hill which provided a good “college-kid” ambiance. Where I live is who I am, and I wanted to capture that through this project. The audio, however, is the outlier. The previous day, Fred Again.., one of my favorite DJs, released an album. “Winnie (end of me)”, is one of the saddest on the album. Pleasing architecture, local artistry, and unique individuals, combined with the audio makes for an emotion-evoking experience.
How do these differ?
Firstly, the metaphor of self project was locally shot, whereas the found footage project used stock footage. Personally, I hate stock footage. I think it cuts corners. But in this case, the use of stock footage adds to the emotional value. The juxtaposition would be nowhere near as strong otherwise. Secondly, the intention of each video is different. The found footage project scratches the surface on video/audio layering, but the metaphor of self project dives deeper, searching for meaning.
